What is a combination rapid antigen self-test or a combo RAT?

According to The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), combination self-tests are like other COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RATs) but feature an additional line on the test cassette that indicates the presence of influenza A and B. Combination RATs test a nasal swab, saliva, or oral fluid sample for multiple viruses that cause respiratory disease (e.g., COVID-19, Influenza A and Influenza B).

Where and when should I use the combination RAT?

The combination test is suitable for both home and workplace use. It is particularly recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 or Influenza. For optimal results, it is advised to perform rapid antigen tests within the initial 7 days of COVID-19 symptoms onset and within the initial 4 days for Influenza symptoms.

Children exhibiting similar symptoms can also undergo the test, but it should always be conducted or supervised by an adult. Refer to the provided test instructions for any specific safety guidelines when using the test on a child.

It's important to note that Combination Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) may not offer the same level of accuracy as laboratory-performed tests such as PCR tests.

Which combination RATs are approved and supplied in Australia?

As of September 2022, The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved the first two nasal combination self-tests (for use at home) that detect both COVID-19 and influenza viral infections in humans:

The TGA reviewed clinical and analytical data showcasing compliance with the minimum performance standards for self-tests for both COVID-19 and influenza.

Explore the TGA website for an up-to-date roster of approved COVID-19 rapid antigen self-tests and combination self-tests available for distribution in Australia. Detailed manufacturer's instructions on how to utilize each test accompany this list. This list is regularly updated as new tests are approved or if tests are cancelled or withdrawn. Only tests sanctioned by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) have legal authorization for sale in Australia.

Where can I buy combination RAT?

Combo RATs can be purchased online, pharmacies, or any other retailers that stock the test. For online purchases, you can get combo RATs at medcart.com.au.

How to use the combination RAT?

Each combination RAT varies slightly, thus, it is important to follow the steps outlined in the provided instructions for the test you select.

If you are to do a saliva test, avoid eating, drinking, smoking, brushing your teeth, or chewing gum for 10–30 minutes (refer to your test instructions for the suggested timing) before sample collection to prevent inaccurate results.

Improper use of the test may yield inaccurate results.

How to read the test results?

Separate lines indicate the result for each virus (e.g., COVID-19, Influenza A, Influenza B) and are mostly displayed in a window on the device. The instructions that came with the test will provide clarification on the interpretation of the result.

  • Absence of lines in test regions (e.g., T, A, and B) with lines only in the control regions (C): Negative result.
  • Presence of lines in both the control regions (C) and any or all test regions (e.g., T, A, and B): Positive result. Even a faint line in a test region is considered positive.
  • Lack of lines in the control regions (C): Invalid result.

Individuals who test positive should remain at home and avoid close contact with another person. As each state may have different rules and recommendations when testing and reporting positive results, please check the information provided by your state or territory health department to find out what you need to do.

If you feel unwell or need COVID-19 advice for someone in your care, talk with your health provider, or speak to a nurse by calling the healthdirect helpline on 1800 022 222.

Is the combination RAT single use?

Yes, all combo RATs are strictly for single use only and afterward, it should be discarded. Never attempt to reuse a test or use the same test on different individuals.

Once the test is complete and the kit contents are disposed of, remember to wash your hands.

How to dispose of a combination RAT?

Instructions on how to dispose of your combination RAT are included in your test kit, check it and follow the instructions. Some kits may include a plastic bag to place the contents after use before throwing it in the rubbish bin.

If there is no bag, place all the contents into a small plastic bag, seal it, and place it into another bag. Make sure the bags are tightly closed before throwing it in the rubbish bin.

NOTE: Do not forget to wash your hands after taking the tests and disposing of them.
